Here’s a reflection on my learning
journey in school…
One
of my weaknesses is procrastinating and writing term papers for school
assignments is certainly not my cup of tea.
If someone takes an hour to complete, I would take 2 hrs. I just can’t stick my bums on my chair…
(being still and focus). The lecturer
shared very good and practical tips on planning my milestone on writing a
research paper. Identifying and
allocating the number of pages and time needed for each outline/section help me
to plan my schedule accordingly. Writing in parts has also encouraged me that the
task is do-able and not too difficult to accomplish. It makes learning/writing more pleasant.
Learning
from Others
I believe learning
from others makes us wiser. This course
has given me the opportunity to work together as a team. My new course mates are eager to learn and to
adapt in a new environment. They learnt
very quickly and are very committed to complete their assignment in due
schedule though they have stop school for more than a decade. The team is quick to back up one another for
some unforeseen circumstances. This has taught
me not to place my inconvenience above helping others. I also saw a generously and cheerful spirit
when it comes to giving and sharing.
This has inspired me to give cheerfully and not out of guilt.
Research Skill
Some years ago, I heard that some
students will ‘siam’ research module as it was their least preferred subject.
They will take it on the year when they are due for graduation. My
perspective on research changed completely after 2 weeks of learning. I used to gather as many books and scanned
those pages that I think maybe useful to my paper writing. I will then layout all the scanned papers and
try to figure out some outline. At times, I prayed that God would give me some revelations
on the desired outline and helping me to piece all information together. This
lesson has taught me to approach systemically. It begin with preparing a research proposal by
identifying the problem and coming out with a thesis statement and tentative
outline. With identified outline, we are
able to search for the appropriate books in the library and begin our
writing. We then finalised the outlines and thesis
statement. I used to tweet my facts findings in order to
match my thesis statement. However, we
were taught that facts should never be changed.
Thesis statement could be amended to match our facts findings.
Research writing requires lots of
practices and it is certainly not an easy task. But it is a skill that every
students in the school must learn and acquired. It has helped to broaden my
scope in finding books, evaluating a good book and writing better term/research
paper.
